The Unity and Diversity of John 10_1-21 and 10:22-42 (“I and My Father are one.”) A. Unity: The Good Shepherd B. Diversity: Feast of Dedication, Beyond the Jordan bookend the second section ( 10:22 -42) II. Taken as a unity, John 10 asserts the basics of reformed soteriology. A. Unconditional Election B. Total Depravity C. Irresistible Grace D. Perseverance of the Saints E. Limited Atonement III. Taken as a unity, John 10 assets the basic truth of the Gospel: Jesus is God, He died for His sheep and gives them resurrection, abundant life, which includes the defeat of our enemies, interior and exterior. IV. Taken as a unity, John 10 stresses the voice of the Shepherd and undershepherds. To position ourselves to hear the voice of Jesus, we must: - Recognize the great difficulty presented by self-deception, and the resultant danger of listening to the inner voice. Jer. 17:9,10; 16:12 ; Pr. 28:25,26; Heb. 3:12-15 - Recognize the tremendous importance of preaching, and prepare ourselves accordingly. - To avoid deceivers, we must recognize our great need to know the written Word of God. - Recognize the great importance of community, which is an essential part of the image of God. Gen. 1:27; Jn 3:8 - Recognize the importance of family worship - Recognize the importance of parents (BYC, October 7-12, tentatively). Prov. 1:8, etc. - Recognize the importance of Christ-like speech Jesus is the new man!! Eph. 4:22-25 - Recognize our obligations to be the voice of Jesus, to speak the truth of His word to one another. Prov. 27:6 - Reflect on the anti-gnostic tendencies of the voice of Jesus being linked to sound waves: -The importance of church membership. - The importance of the sacraments V. The second half of John 10 distinctively teaches us: A. Jesus is the Temple , sanctified not by men, but by God. B. Jesus is the Great Shepherd King, come to drive out false religious and civil rulers. Ps. 82 C. Jesus is the Hammer, the “Jews” are followers of Antiochus, desecraters of the Temple D. The definitive Purim has come, true Jews are eternally secure, those that are the wilderness will be destroyed. The future belongs to us.
